It’s hard to imagine that in many cultures in the world today, girls and women are shamed into silence about this most natural and beautiful biological process. Their communities remain uneducated about what menstrual cycles are and, worst of all, how to properly manage this monthly event. If sanitary supplies are available at all, they are usually for sale in male-run convenience stores and girls are too embarrassed to purchase them, so they often resort to using scraps of cloth in order to avoid humiliation. You might find it surprising that this is a topic of conversation at Beauty Heroes. What does global period care have to do with healthy beauty? According to my definition of beauty: everything.
I remember the moment I first felt like a bonafide business owner. I was still in startup phase, and I was pondering the Beauty Heroes business model. I had always known I wanted to use my business to make a positive impact. But how? And how much could I give? There were so many worthy causes that pulled at my heart strings. Then

So far we’ve shared with you our Blue Beauty Commitments and Best Practices companies can adopt to actively fade into blue. Now its your turn, and let’s be honest, until you – WE – decide to make new, blue buying decisions, things aren’t going to change all that much. Contributing to a bluer planet is a team sport, and you are the team captain. It’s game time.
Project Blue Beauty celebrates healthy beauty brands built on the foundation of ingredient transparency and ethical sourcing and environmental stewardship. These pioneering companies put their money where their mouth is, and quite frankly, it’s inspiring. So inspiring, in fact, that we created a list for companies that want to live lighter and leave a legacy of positive impact. The following list is a compilation of practices and initiatives that we have seen in action and that provide proven positive impact on the planet.
While there is not one single and direct path to go from green to blue – it’s more like wading deeper and deeper into the ocean – we know that by setting our sights on the horizon line and visualizing what success looks like, we’ll get there faster. That is why we’ve established 10 Commitments that will guide us in our vetting process while providing inspiration to brands and our customers. While most of the brands we carry already meet many of these criteria, our hope is that these 10 Commitments will inspire even more action and that together, we’ll all do a little more to live a little lighter.
Living Lighter is how I think about approaching a less wasteful lifestyle. There is an amazing zero-waste movement happening all over the world that is so exciting to watch and be a part of. But, for most, the words zero-waste feel unattainable and maybe a little off-putting. But living lighter is something we can all do. It’s an everyday practice; a series of mini-challenges. We just need the tools. This is what inspired me to create a Living Lighter Discovery. For the last six months, I have been working on assembling a collection of the tools that help me live lighter. I am used to curating and telling one product and brand story at a time, so our first ever Living Lighter Discovery is different from our traditional model, but with good reason: to deliver on our promise to introduce our community to products that make our lives better and help us live lighter on the planet.
Clean cosmetics just entered another dimension, and the brand leading the way is Āether Beauty, an emerging color cosmetics line offering highly pigmented eye shadow palettes made with zero-waste materials (read: no magnets or mirrors). Effective immediately: clean, sustainable beauty is on the same plane as traditional beauty brands. When it comes to beauty and packaging innovation, Āether is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest – appealing to consumer tastes and values, without compromise. The Āether Eye Shadow palette is considered a zero-waste product, which means each component is recyclable or reusable. The palette contains no mirror or magnets which would pose a problem for recycling centers, just a small price to pay for sustainability. And, as you’ll read, Āether ticks all the boxes of a blue beauty brand: by sourcing ethically and giving back to the environment.
