Meet Sarah James; the woman behind the well-appointed healthy lifestyle blog Whoorl. Well written since 2005, Whoorl embodies one of our guiding values, ‘smart is beautiful.’ Sophisticated women follow Sarah’s journey through healthy beauty, art, fashion, and family life as well as her well known ‘Odds and Ends.’ I always learn something new when I speak with Sarah, as does her reader, and I’m thrilled to welcome her as the newest member of our Circle of Trust. I think you’ll agree, she’s definitely more than a woman in the know, she’s one who knows better and is happy to share. Generous, whimsical and elegant, learn more about our newest Beauty Heroes Brand Ambassador.
A Hero’s Journey
At the root of Albert Einstein’s life’s work is a single fundamental truth: beauty is our birthright. He understood that beauty is the basic law that governs the universe. All creatures respond instinctively to beauty – color, taste, touch, smell and symmetry – and adapt accordingly to survive. Consider the flower, arguably one of the most beautiful gifts of nature. Flowers engineer the shape of their petals, the length of their pistil, the smell and texture of their sweet nectar and their trapping mechanism to ensure their captor is sufficiently covered in the flower’s DNA. Beautifying itself is how the flower ensures its species lives on. Since the beginning of humanity, we have abided by these laws of nature. Whether a rite of passage, a tribal practice or a self-care ritual, we’ve been altering our appearance with artistry and artifice in celebration of beauty.
It’s easy being green if you’re one of Katie O’Sullivan’s readers. Her sassy yet completely authentic style will make you WANT to be rid of toxic beauty for good. Writing from her heart about only products she loves, she’s just as skilled at making you want to red your lips as she is as making you want to ditch that disposable coffee cup. A native New Yorker and self proclaimed green product junkie, Katie’s quest to find a healthy alternative to conventional deodorant led her to a life-changing article on the amount of lead in conventional lipstick. This launched her obsession with all things organic and non-toxic beauty. Once she knew better, there was no going back. So she sought to help educate others on her blog, The Green Product Junkie. Here she writes about the healthy beauty and lifestyle products she loves, in hopes to help people make the transition into a more toxic-free existence.
I never know when it’s going to happen – that moment when a beauty product takes my breath away. I can’t tell just by looking at it, though beautiful packaging doesn’t hurt. I can’t tell by its color, though it’s true that I’m drawn to sparkly, shiny things (who isn’t?). The magic is in the experience – the texture, the glide, the silky-soft feel on my skin, and oh! the scent! Modern Minerals has all of these in spades, which is why I literally had to catch my breath when I first experienced the flower essence-infused color line, formulated by Diane Read.I remember the moment clearly. Last year, Diane attended a cocktail party I was hosting in New York, and she brought the world’s best hostess gift – a little bag full of spherical eyeshadows and glimmering lip glosses. The next morning, I opened into each one like a child unwraps Easter candy, devouring the colors, textures and natural fragrances from the flower essences infused into each formula. I was smitten. And then, the moment happened. I applied the perfect lip gloss. I was done. Game over. I had to work with Modern Minerals, a true up and coming indie beauty brand.

I love meeting healthy beauty enthusiasts from around the world as Beauty Heroes is proud to deliver to and serve an international clientele, and green beauty is received and embraced slightly differently in other countries. One of my most recent discoveries has been Ailish Lucas, the natural beauty behind The Glow Getter, a perfect name for such a bright light in healthy beauty. Ailish splits her time between the U.K. and New Zealand so she brings a lot of international perspective to our community of Brand Ambassadors. In addition, she is launching the first ever, online, green beauty and wellness event; The Glow Summit. The summit is a week-long virtual event of video interviews with healthy beauty and lifestyle experts, challenges and resources for you to download and help you get your glow on from the inside and out. The summit will harness the wisdom of women like nutritionist Madeline Shaw and Thoughtfully Magazine Editor in Chief Brandie Gilliam, as well as a few of the other leading women in green beauty like Sarita Coren, Beauty By Britanie and Sacred Beauty coach and makeup artist Rebecca Casciano. The event is FREE and open to all, so what are you waiting for, register here! But for now, I’d like to turn the spotlight back to The Glow Getter as I ask her about her background and beauty and what lights her up!
My favorite part of my inspired curation process is working directly with the visionary people behind our healthy beauty brands, and this month is no exception. This May brings our second Hero Product selection with Mahalo Skin Care, an artisan-crafted by hand green beauty brand from the garden island of Kaua’i. Last June, we shared an in-depth Behind The Scenes look at Maryna and her husband Mark who set out to develop a skin care line that works on every level – energetic, physical and spiritual. Because my intention for Beauty Heroes is to connect you with what you are using on your skin and body, I wanted to take you further behind the scenes with Mahalo and this month’s Hero Product selection, The Rare Indigo™ Beauty Balm.
While there’s still a ways to go, the awareness of the importance of healthy beauty is growing. I recently met Jana, the young woman behind Small Bits of Loveliness who blogs about natural beauty from Slovenia, in English. A licensed beautician with a degree in anthropology, Jana is fueled by a love for healthy beauty, she speaks to women all over the world about how to access and delight in healthy, non-toxic beauty. I am over the moon to welcome her as our newest Beauty Heroes Brand Ambassador.
Each month Beauty Heroes brings a new product into your home, one that’s carefully curated, both for its purity and its results. But, I’d argue, no hero acts alone! The products that line your vanity and travel around in your makeup case are only the very start of an effective beauty routine; you just can’t stop at the surface. If you’re truly aiming to look and feel your best every day (And aren’t we all to some degree? I call this very natural desire healthy vanity.), nutrition for beauty needs a foundational place in your day-to-day routine.
When I was younger, buying something – anything – always made me feel good. More was better and stuff was good and shopping gave me a buzz. But somewhere along the way, I become a more conscious consumer. Perhaps it was one too many “instant gratification” purchases that left me feeling deflated only days later. Or maybe becoming a mother, having to manage more than just my own ‘stuff’, and thinking about the future of the planet I am leaving for my child, has mademe more conscious about how and what I buy. This shift in my consumer consciousness has made me pickier, for sure, but also more sensitive and thoughtful about what I consume as well as more grateful for what I already have. As I became aware of my consumer habits, my lifestyle changed from “more is better” to “use less, love more.”
