Each month Beauty Heroes brings a new product into your home, one that’s carefully curated, both for its purity and its results. But, I’d argue, no hero acts alone! The products that line your vanity and travel around in your makeup case are only the very start of an effective beauty routine; you just can’t stop at the surface. If you’re truly aiming to look and feel your best every day (And aren’t we all to some degree? I call this very natural desire healthy vanity.), nutrition for beauty needs a foundational place in your day-to-day routine.
A Hero’s Journey
When I was younger, buying something – anything – always made me feel good. More was better and stuff was good and shopping gave me a buzz. But somewhere along the way, I become a more conscious consumer. Perhaps it was one too many “instant gratification” purchases that left me feeling deflated only days later. Or maybe becoming a mother, having to manage more than just my own ‘stuff’, and thinking about the future of the planet I am leaving for my child, has mademe more conscious about how and what I buy. This shift in my consumer consciousness has made me pickier, for sure, but also more sensitive and thoughtful about what I consume as well as more grateful for what I already have. As I became aware of my consumer habits, my lifestyle changed from “more is better” to “use less, love more.”
Gregg Renfrew – wife, mom, retail titan and entrepreneur – has a busy life, but a simple mission: get safe products in the hands of everyone. After discovering that most of the personal care products on the market are unregulated and contain dozens of toxic chemicals that have been banned in other countries, she knew something had to change. Enter Beautycounter, her beauty brainchild devoted to progress.
Beauty Heroes continues to grow and evolve out of the learnings from our members, Brand Ambassadors, Spa Superheroes and the incredible group of Founders behind each of our clean beauty brands. It is this learning that inspires me to keep creating, keep envisioning “what’s next.” What I am most grateful for in 2015 was learning that there is a place for our service that delivers the very best in non-toxic beauty, one Hero Product at time. Thank you for being a part of this journey. While we’ll never give you More than you need (thus creating unnecessary waste), we certainly do plan on doing More of the things that bring us joy and make us feel beautiful. Here is our vision board for 2016.
Beauty inspires fun and creativity, and Mercedes, the woman behind the super-popular YouTube channel, l’amour et la musique is a prime example of this. This PhD and DJ spends her free time weaving her passion for beauty with music and candid, in-depth reviews. Earning the trust and loyalty of her audience by engaging with them faithfully, she seems to always have their best interest in mind. In this interview we learn more about Mercedes, a trusted and accessible voice in green beauty, her favorite superpower ingredient, mantra and how she launched her successful Vlog.
Vintner’s Daughter was founded by April Gargiulo, whose family traditions of fine winemaking influenced not only the name of her company, but also her process. In an effort to simplify skincare and raise the bar in efficacy, April approaches skincare through simplicity and (for now) focuses all her attention on one product. Going down this path, April cuts through the excess in an industry that’s all about doing, selling and applying more, and elegantly embraces the ‘less is more’ ethos. Adding to her Beauty Superhero qualifications, she also donates 2% of every sale of Vintner’s Daughter to V Day, an organization dedicated to ending violence against women and girls. I recently met April at her gorgeous home overlooking the San Francisco Bay where shared with me exactly how she arrived at this point, and why it works for her.
There’s nothing I love more than meeting other women who have a deep passion for healthy beauty, so much so that they’ve made it their life’s work. Stemming from her personal journey to optimize her health, Nicolle serves as a writer and editor for several leading publications that are helping women understand how important, stylish and fun it is to commit to clean beauty. By way of her contributions to No More Dirty Looks – the website that spun off from the groundbreaking book –, Thoughtfully Magazine – the leading publication for eco-conscious living – or her other projects, Nicolle has become and trusted voice on the correlation between health and beauty. Today we’re proud to welcome Nicolle as our latest addition to the Beauty Heroes Brand Ambassador community and share a glimpse into her personal beauty philosophy, her super-easy and essential prescription for health and a couple of her guilty pleasures.
Everything about Rebecca Casciano radiates holistic beauty; her smile, her words and her work. If you follow Rebecca on social media, as I had for a year before being introduced to her our inaugural Brand Ambassador Sarita Coren, you’ll witness the many ways she just breathes beauty – as a makeup artist, wellness coach and healthy beauty thought leader and facilitator. To Rebecca, beauty is a ‘practice’. It’s how we do everything. And it begins with the art of self-love, which she teaches and models in an approachable, compassionate and soulful way. I am so thrilled to welcome her as the newest member of our Beauty Heroes Brand Ambassador community – as I know there is so much she can teach us about holistic and healthy beauty. I personally am looking forward to attending one of her Sacred Beauty Salon Events! And I just loved learning a little more about her fun-filled life in Brooklyn, New York. I hope you do too!
I was recently introduced to Shiva Rose, the Iranian activist and actress, and fell in love with her down-to-earth beauty and her well-informed holistic health and lifestyle site, The Local Rose. Upon learning of her passion for non-toxic skincare and the expansion of her own Shiva Rose ultra-pure beauty collection, it was a natural fit for her to join in support of our recent Beauty Cabinet Detox campaign. I now look forward to each new article she shares on The Local Rose, along with all the gorgeous photos, that make up a collection of resources to support spirit, skin, body, mind and heart. I had the opportunity to speak with Shiva and learn a bit more about her muses, mantras and how she ceremoniously weaves the beauty of nature into an active, inspired and holistic life.
At the beginning of this year I posted a Spa Heroes Vision Board for 2015, and at the top of the list I outlined my wish to help our customers “Use Less.” Although it may sound counterintuitive, I created Spa Heroes to help you use fewer products, simplify your life and leave cosmetic clutter behind.
