Being a green beauty brand is about more than healthy, good for you, ingredients. The green beauty movement is also leading the way in sustainable packaging and business practices that support the health of our environment. While Vapour Organic Beauty’s green beauty packaging is secondary to the formula inside the bottle, it is still an important part of our experience with a brand, and any brand founder will tell you that it’s one of the most challenging parts of creating and sustaining a compelling beauty brand. Not only does packaging need to be functional, it must also be beautiful, adequately protect the product inside from the air and elements, and be as sustainable as possible. This month we celebrate the launch of Vapour Organic Beauty’s transition from plastic to glass packaging with our Limited Edition Discovery (that’s selling out in record time). I asked Kristine Keheley and Kyrsia Boinis to share with us just what is involved in a packaging update and more ways Vapour is leading the way in sustainable beauty.

If you’re reading this, chances are you think about your health holistically, considering all of the many factors that contribute to wellbeing. You know that health is more than the absence of disease, and that diet, environment and even stress play a critical role.
It seems as if collagen is showing up everywhere, finding its way into products that now line wellness, supplement and beauty retail shelves. The science shows that the benefits of collagen supplementation include improved skin elasticity and hair, nail and bone strength. But there’s more. I was surprised to learn that Vital Proteins was actually developed to support the joint health of its Founder, Kurt Seidensticker, an avid runner, and not to support healthy skin and hair, which I assumed.
The West has long borrowed healing principles from the East to treat the body holistically. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda have greatly influenced our culture of wellness in the West. Traditional Chinese Medicine balances yin, yang and qi, while Ayurveda focuses on balancing the elements of earth, fire and air. As Eastern herbs have been making their way into our smoothies, teas and tonics, it makes sense that we would look to these traditional South East Asian ingredients for skincare and how they can benefit us when used topically on the skin.
What I love most about Beauty Heroes is discovering new beauty with a purpose, and then spreading their message to our community. The longer I do this work, the more impressed I am when I encounter an emerging indie brand with a distinct point of difference and a clear voice. This is a very crowded space, and standing out takes vision, courage and grit. Supadra, founder of Siam SEAS, possesses these traits in spades.Supadra’s call to create Siam SEAS was answered readily and unconditionally. The seed was planted early in her childhood, but the call wasn’t clear until later in life, when Supadra faced her own insecurities with her chronic skin conditions. Her journey of self acceptance led her to practice the art of self-care, and through these rituals, she not only reclaimed her self confidence but discovered her love for natural product formulation. Now, every time I experience Siam SEAS, it is clear that each product is a remembrance of the traditions, scents, colors and aromas of the East, and a labor of self-love.
They say how you do one thing is how you do everything. Ever since discovering how many harmful ingredients were hiding in my skincare (and starting a company to do something about it), I have been slowly waking up to conscious consumption in other areas in my life. My most recent focus: my closet. I have so much to learn about conscious fashion, but what I know today is that traditional fashion has a dark side, and once I awaken to the facts, it’s impossible to unknow them. I recently bought shoes made from recycled water bottles, GOTS certified lounge and underwear and a fully compostable cell phone case. It feels good – and looks good – to be a part of this movement. I never felt that luxury was about labels. It has always been about quality. For me, true quality is in the intention and sustainable practices of a company, not just in its name. Happily, I’m not the only one who feels this way. We’re living in a zeitgeist of conscious consumerism, and we see businesses in all industries steering towards better, cleaner and eco-friendlier practices.

I have felt more confident focusing on whole food products because they are more easily absorbed and assimilated by the body.
