Meet STAMBA: The Brand To Lead The Whole Food Awakening

So we start 2020 with an unlikely Hero product from a brand we’ve long loved. We first introduced you to RANAVAT last winter with our Indies Discovery. You may remember my interview with Michelle Ranavat where she shared her passion for ingredient sourcing and her devotion to creating the most regal Ayurvedic beauty rituals. Michelle’s aesthetic is unparalleled – from her formula’s scents and textures to the smallest detail in the brand’s design, Michelle has defined a new standard of luxury for Ayurvedic-centered brands. read more

Project Blue Beauty: Can a Color Cue a Consciousness Shift?

A new year brings a promise of a new beginning, and a new decade, even more so. But in many ways, 2020 feels different. On the horizon looms an election, a deeply divisive impeachment process and worsening climate conditions. The season is ripe for any solution that attempts to inspire unity and to relax our anxieties during social, political and environmental unrest. And this is when we turn to art, ‘blue beauty’ and nature for a moment of reprieve. Enter Pantone. For 20 years, Pantone has announced a Color of the Year, based on global trend analyses across fashion, beauty, entertainment, travel, and social and economic conditions that inform the cultural zeitgeist of our time. The Pantone Color Institute partners with global brands to effectively translate the power, psychology, and emotion of color in their design strategy. Who can forget the infamous scene in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada when Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, claps back at Anne Hathaway’s fashion ignorance with the most perfectly delivered monologue about the power of Cerulean Blue (2000’s Color of the Year) to drive global commerce, from the runway all the way down to the clearance bin? The Pantone Color of the Year not only influences product development and purchasing decisions across industries, but it is also meant to reflect the psychological and emotional state of our time. The 12-day itinerary involved much more than the main event, which was to support Danielle Burden, Saalt’s Director of Impact, as she educated rural Kenyan women and girls on the transformative power of the menstrual cup. I also participated in a women’s day for widows and guardians of orphans, hosted by Outreach to the World (OWI). We celebrated at a day-long birthday party for the orphans, visited a free medical clinic that was open to the entire city of Kitale, and spent time at Sister Freda’s Medical Center and girls school, a day I’ll never forget. Needless to say, there’s absolutely no way I can share the full experience in one blog post. I have never been on a trip that was solely dedicated to social impact and service so I wasn’t expecting the lessons and gifts that came from it. The most remarkable experience was realizing that when we’re in service, we end up receiving so much more than we give.read more

Beauty Heroes Travels to Kenya

I’m back from Kenya…did you follow my trip? If you did, first of all, thank you for coming to witness a tiny bit of my experience of Beauty Heroes in Kenya. If you didn’t, we’ve added all of my posts from Saalt x BH as a Highlight on Instagram. Dana Jackson on Healing Luxury and Radical Self Care

When Dana Jackson was diagnosed with Lupus and Lupus Nephritis, it was after a long battle that left her house-bound with debilitating pain and an unsightly skin and hair condition for which she could find no relief.  Alone and without the answers she was looking for, she began creating the solutions she needed to treat her damaged and dry skin using potent, organic, wild-harvested botanicals. Her first successful batch of Heal Whipped Skin Soufflé was literally a balm for her soul – both soothing to her skin and also, finally, a small victory on her healing path. And, it was the catalyst for her brand, Beneath Your Mask. We were delighted to feature her first Hero product in last year’s Indie Holiday series, (watch the video below to hear more about Dana’s story!) and we’re bringing it back to a wider audience this year, alongside her new product, Remedy Conditioning Lip Balm. More on that in a moment.read more

Saalt x Beauty Heroes: The most impactful beauty collab, period.

It’s hard to imagine that in many cultures in the world today, girls and women are shamed into silence about this most natural and beautiful biological process. Their communities remain uneducated about what menstrual cycles are and, worst of all, how to properly manage this monthly event. If sanitary supplies are available at all, they are usually for sale in male-run convenience stores and girls are too embarrassed to purchase them, so they often resort to using scraps of cloth in order to avoid humiliation.  You might find it surprising that this is a topic of conversation at Beauty Heroes. What does global period care have to do with healthy beauty? According to my definition of beauty: everything.   read more

DINO Apparel | Comfort Is Wellness

Since its Beauty Heroes debut in November 2018, Dino Apparel has been one of my wardrobe mainstays, taking me from the office to errands to dinner with friends, not to mention my go-to uniform for near every single flight or road trip. A devotee of both form and function, Dino Apparel is versatile with designs that fit, flatter and allow me to move, a must for any working mother. While I own practically every piece Dino Apparel has created and wear them all in constant rotation, it’s the jumpsuit that really jumped out at me when I discovered it last year on a photoshoot. I instantly fell in love with the flattering shape and its effortless, year-round lounge – travel – work functionality. If I had to wear only one thing for the rest of my life, this would be it.read more
