They say how you do one thing is how you do everything. Ever since discovering how many harmful ingredients were hiding in my skincare (and starting a company to do something about it), I have been slowly waking up to conscious consumption in other areas in my life. My most recent focus: my closet. I have so much to learn about conscious fashion, but what I know today is that traditional fashion has a dark side, and once I awaken to the facts, it’s impossible to unknow them. I recently bought shoes made from recycled water bottles, GOTS certified lounge and underwear and a fully compostable cell phone case. It feels good – and looks good – to be a part of this movement. I never felt that luxury was about labels. It has always been about quality. For me, true quality is in the intention and sustainable practices of a company, not just in its name. Happily, I’m not the only one who feels this way. We’re living in a zeitgeist of conscious consumerism, and we see businesses in all industries steering towards better, cleaner and eco-friendlier practices.
Use Less. Love More.
Happy, Healthy 2018, Beauty Heroes Tribe! At the end of last year, I decided to bid adieu to our cute Superhero masks that came with each beauty discovery and replace them with our monthly #Herogram card, featuring the Hero product and an inspirational quote. We also upgraded our paper to be 100% recycled stock. From that first step, I made a promise to look for new ways to use less every day. It’s a daily practice, and I’m far from perfect, but we’ve made changes that have benefited personal and environmental health, and our company has scaled consciously and sustainably. It feels good, so I’m going to keep going, and I’d love for you to come along!
As an entrepreneur, I’m constantly thinking about innovation. But what I’ve learned is that creating something new just to have something to talk about isn’t innovation – it’s cheap and easy marketing. Real innovation may come less often, but it leaves a lasting impression. Indeed, real innovation changes the game. This is what Kari Gran and her business partner, Lisa Strain, have accomplished. Dubbed the Little Black Dress of Eco-Beauty, Kari Gran epitomizes simple sophistication. With only 5 unique products in their skincare range, Kari and Lisa are perhaps the most calculated formulators in Indie Beauty, launching new products not based on marketing cycles, but based on authentic consumer demand. As two of the smartest, most authentic and practical women in beauty, Kari and Lisa assume the customer (that would be us) is as smart as they are, and doesn’t want to be sold or told anything that’s not true and that doesn’t serve them. I loved working with Kari and Lisa on their 2016 launch of a serum sunscreen – Three Sixty-Five SPF 28 – and was so excited to learn that Kari had decided to launch one, very special, new product. Knowing her commitment to minimalist skincare, I immediately asked if we could feature the Essential Balm as a special, holiday discovery. In the following conversation, Kari shares more about staying true to her minimalist skincare philosophy and how Kari Gran Skincare resists the urge to cater to industry demands, and instead listen to what consumers want.
Indie Beauty Expo, known in the industry as simply iBE, has quickly evolved into one of the most exciting and engaging consumer beauty events in our industry. Co-founded by Jillian Wright and Nader Nayemi-Rad, the event puts a spotlight on … Continued
A spa is a sacred space. It is a destination for health, restoration, celebration and moments of peace. Over the course of a 17 year career as a Spa Director, I also began to appreciate spa as a lifestyle, one … Continued
When I was younger, buying something – anything – always made me feel good. More was better and stuff was good and shopping gave me a buzz. But somewhere along the way, I become a more conscious consumer. Perhaps it was one too many “instant gratification” purchases that left me feeling deflated only days later. Or maybe becoming a mother, having to manage more than just my own ‘stuff’, and thinking about the future of the planet I am leaving for my child, has mademe more conscious about how and what I buy. This shift in my consumer consciousness has made me pickier, for sure, but also more sensitive and thoughtful about what I consume as well as more grateful for what I already have. As I became aware of my consumer habits, my lifestyle changed from “more is better” to “use less, love more.”
Beauty Heroes continues to grow and evolve out of the learnings from our members, Brand Ambassadors, Spa Superheroes and the incredible group of Founders behind each of our clean beauty brands. It is this learning that inspires me to keep creating, keep envisioning “what’s next.” What I am most grateful for in 2015 was learning that there is a place for our service that delivers the very best in non-toxic beauty, one Hero Product at time. Thank you for being a part of this journey. While we’ll never give you More than you need (thus creating unnecessary waste), we certainly do plan on doing More of the things that bring us joy and make us feel beautiful. Here is our vision board for 2016.
As you begin making the switch to non-toxic beauty products and do a cabinet detox, you’re likely to wind up with plenty of containers filled with remnants of carcinogenic and hormone disrupting ingredients. While your first instinct may be to rinse out and recycle these product-lined bottles, jars and tubes, doing so sends these toxic chemicals right into our surface water (as does using them on a daily basis, but thank goodness you’re done with that). We know that contaminating water is not what you had in mind so here are some better ways to dispose of old product containers and their contents as safely as possible.
At the beginning of this year I posted a Spa Heroes Vision Board for 2015, and at the top of the list I outlined my wish to help our customers “Use Less.” Although it may sound counterintuitive, I created Spa Heroes to help you use fewer products, simplify your life and leave cosmetic clutter behind.
We’re on a mission to change the way you look at skincare. As we embark on a new year, I thought it was only appropriate to share my vision with you, and invite you to use less and love more, be beautiful, celebrate the heroes, elevate the standard and most of all, love your face. Hero On!
