Meet Sweet Marie: Nurse, Vlogger, Skincare Enthusaist

I’ll never forget the first time I saw one of Marie’s YouTube videos on her channel AndTheColorGreen. It was a few years ago now, and Marie, a green beauty vlogger was a Beauty Heroes member on Maui. I remember it well because I was doubled over laughing, for most of it. It was smart, creative and quirky in the best way. I fell in love with her authenticity, she is someone who embraces the ‘do you’ spirit of YouTube. It became a monthly ritual for me and my team to gather around the computer and watch Marie’s monthly Beauty Heroes review. Eventually I wrote to her and told her I had to meet her, and I asked her if she would join our community of trusted beauty experts, as she was already clearly an ambassador. What I love about Marie is that she studies skincare, the science of each formula, educates her audience and then just embraces the experience. Each video is artsy and educational and really fun. This past April I finally met Marie when she flew in from Maui participate in our beach cleanup with Honua Skincare just like a true Beauty Heroes Brand Ambassador. I hope you enjoy meeting her in this short interview, and definitely follow her on YouTube.

What inspired you to become a green beauty vlogger on your YouTube Channel, AndTheColorGreen?

It was an evolutionary process. I have a background in art, so I love the actual process of editing videos. When I started my channel, I had no intention of putting myself in front of the camera. It was just going to be a place to make fun videos. In fact, my first upload was one of my visual haiku poems.

I was much too self-conscious about my melasma (facial discolorations) to imagine putting myself in front of an audience. After getting to know some of the people on You Tube, I decided to be in my videos. Every video became a lesson in self-love. I had to stop picking on myself and accept that my videos had value beyond what I looked like. It was then that I really let my quirky self come through.

I have kept making videos because of the amazing love and support of the You Tube community. No matter how silly I get, they still come back to interact with me.

What’s your beauty philosophy?

I focus on understanding ingredients and the skin structure. I find that helps sort through the millions of products there are in the market.

First, I always read an ingredient list on a new product. It generally tells me everything I need to know about the potential of a product.

Second, I try not to overdo it. Some of my skin struggles are genetic like dry skin and melasma (my mom still suffers from those same issues at 65), so no magic cream or oil will ever really fully resolve those issues. Instead, I try to focus on being smart about my purchases and looking at skin health from a holistic stand point.

You are a nurse by trade, what is your prescription for health?

It is actually pretty simple. My tips are; manage your stress, drink more water, play outside and wash your hands. Simple and yet so effective at improving your health.

Do you have a favorite ingredient? What do you love about it?

I love simple ingredients like Jojoba oil and honey. They have stood the test of time. These ingredients are not fads or marketing claims. They have held up as effective skincare over the ages and deserve respect!

Jojoba oil actually helps our skin become stronger by being able to intermingle with our natural lipid barrier. It is a staple in my dry skincare routine.

Honey is literally a powerhouse of enzymes, vitamins, and hydration. I will always have a jar of it at my house for face masks. It is one of nature’s most perfect gifts to us.

What inspires you?

Oh, man! The real question is what doesn’t inspire me? Here are just a few:
Jesus, waves, toast, plumeria, smiles, coffee, my babies, skateboarding, succulents, popcorn, Casey Neistat, Iceland, mountain climbing, tiny houses, smart people, Bob Ross, the smell of fresh rain, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

How do you power up in the morning?

Coffee and the bellow of a small child calling my name.

Do you have a personal mantra?

None of us are promised tomorrow. I have watched people of every nation, creed, religion, lifestyle and so forth, have life taken from them unexpectedly. Death and disease show no prejudice. Every morning you open your eyes is a gift. Every night you get to lay your head down to sleep is a gift. Don’t waste even a minute of it!

Can you share one thing we don’t know about you yet?

I have a personal goal to climb to the top of the highest point in all 50 states. I have done 23 so far!

Your Zen Moment: How do you unwind at the end of the day?

My favorite moment at the end of the day is when I pick what cleanser I am going to use! It is by far the largest portion of my skincare collection. I love choosing the scent and texture of the cleanser. I take my time, evaluating what occurred in my day and that influences what my skin needs. It’s definitely my little moment of reflection.

In addition to working professionally as a nurse, and filming YouTube videos, what else do you do for fun?

I have started my own face mask subscription box! It is actually a very simple concept. We send enough dry powder face mask for a month. We give you tips and tricks for how to tailor it to your skin. You create your own Face Mask Alchemy!

It sounds so simple but there is so much I have had to learn! I now have such a profound respect for people who start their own skincare lines. There are just so many aspects to consider and details to attend to.

Since my background comes from art, I always have to have a project going of some sort. Right now, Face Mask Alchemy is that project! When I was little, my mom called them creation stations.

Where are we most likely to run into you on Sunday?

Without a doubt, playing outside with my three favorite people!
