Q+A WITH ARJUN
JUST ASK ARJUN
Let me just say, I am particularly excited to announce Arjun to our community of Beauty Heroes Brand Ambassadors. I had been searching for a man who connected to healthy living like the rest of our conscious beauty circle of trust. So, when Elena shared his blog, JustAskArjun.com with me, I was very excited to find a man who just ‘gets it’. Reading his blog over the last couple of months, I have enjoyed hearing his process of evaluating products for ingredients, performance and packaging, while staying mindful of keeping a realistic skincare routine. He resonates deeply with brands who have a commitment to delivering a unique offering with careful ingredient sourcing. After several months of testing Beauty Heroes, I was so grateful when Arjun accepted my invitation to become a Beauty Heroes Brand Ambassador as he aligns so perfectly with our vision to connect with people around the world and share the joy of healthy beauty discovery. I hope you enjoy learning more about Arjun, as I have.
What inspired you to begin writing about beauty AND launch your blog?
I have a background in creative writing, and I’ve had personal blogs since 2001. I used my first few blogs as platforms to showcase my creative writing, and none of them were skincare-related.
Before I started JustAskArjun.com, skincare was a guilty pleasure for me. I was always obsessed with skincare, but I didn’t know anyone who shared the same interest. None of my friends understood my passion for skincare, so it became more of a secret hobby.
I suffered from really bad acne during my teens and early twenties, and that was one of the things that got me interested in skincare. What started as a quest to contain my acne slowly became a full-blown obsession. I became interested in all aspects of skincare, from branding to ingredients and product textures. Three years ago, I developed an interest in clean living, and subsequently, green skincare. Going green and eliminating potentially-harmful chemicals from my skincare transformed my skin. I was acne-free, for the first time in my adult life. Green beauty is very popular now, but even just a couple of years ago, it was considered very niche. I couldn’t find any reviews for any of the products I loved, so I decided to start my own blog. That’s how it all began!
What’s your beauty and skincare philosophy?
My skincare philosophy is to listen to my skin and use products that work for my skin type. Just because a product is popular or beautifully-packaged doesn’t mean it will work for me.
My beauty philosophy is to be kind to yourself and learn to embrace your imperfections. I used to be very critical about my appearance and hated being in front of the camera. I have learned to let go, and I no longer get annoyed if I get tagged in an unflattering picture on Facebook!
What is your prescription for Health?
I try to cut out dairy, gluten and refined sugars from my diet. I find that it makes a huge difference to the condition of my skin, as well. I try and eat organic, whenever I can. I believe that your physical health is linked to your emotional wellbeing, so I try to stay positive.
Do you have a favorite ingredient? What do you love about it?
My favorite ingredient keeps changing all the time. I’m currently rediscovering argan oil. I love how light, nourishing and versatile it is!
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by art, literature and design. I love to travel. I find that it really expands my horizons.
How do you power up in the morning? How do you get energized?
I am not a morning person, so I need a big cup of coffee to start my day. I never skip breakfast: I really do believe it’s the most important meal of the day. I normally have grain-free cereal with lots of fresh fruit, nuts and a tablespoon of marine collagen powder.
Do you have a personal mantra?
My personal mantra is to be yourself and embrace your uniqueness. I also believe in trusting the universe because I think everything happens for a reason (even if it doesn’t seem so at the time).
What perspective do you feel you bring to beauty as a man?
I don’t believe in gender stereotypes, so I wouldn’t like to attribute any of my unique perspectives to my gender. I think the perspective that I bring to beauty is one that is detailed, well-researched, balanced and honest.
Are most of your readers men or women? Do you write to a specific audience?
Most of my readers are women, but I do have a very small but loyal male following, as well. Male beauty bloggers are a rare breed, especially within the green community, and I love how we all support and encourage each other.
While I am definitely aware of my audience, I don’t actively tailor any of my content to suit a particular audience. I feel that writing is most effective when you express yourself honestly (and kindly) without thinking too much about the end result. I share my experiences with products as best as I can, and I am happy when they resonate with my readers.
Can you share one thing we don’t know about you yet?
I don’t know if this is something you don’t know about me yet, but although I now call Australia home, I grew up in a small part of India called Kerala. It’s a beautiful part of the world with lush green scenery and sleepy backwaters. It’s the Ayurvedic capital of India, you get the best Ayurvedic massages and treatments in Kerala.
In addition to your successful blog, what else do you do for work, hobbies and fun?
In addition to the blog, I work full time, in corporate communications. I’m a bit of a fashion victim, and I have a soft spot for avant-garde labels like Margiela and Comme des Garçons. I love reading, and I am a published short story writer.
Where are we most likely to run into you on a Sunday?
In a café, ordering a coffee and wondering what to order for brunch.
