Q + A with Jana
Smalls Bits of Loveliness

While there’s still a ways to go, the awareness of the importance of healthy beauty is growing.  I recently met Jana, the young woman behind Small Bits of Loveliness who blogs about natural beauty from Slovenia, in English.  A licensed beautician with a degree in anthropology, Jana is fueled by a love for healthy beauty, she speaks to women all over the world about how to access and delight in healthy, non-toxic beauty. I am over the moon to welcome her as our newest Beauty Heroes Brand Ambassador.

What inspired you to begin writing about beauty and launch Small Bits of Loveliness?

I’ve always been interested in beauty but I have never imagined I would one day write about it. When I was in a beautician school I thought I’d be working in a spa but I quickly found out that’s not really my cup of tea. Sure I would love doing certain things like facials and makeup, but that’s usually not even half of things beauticians do here in Slovenia. That’s why I went studying something completely different. My classmate, who is now one of my closest friends, tried to persuade me to start writing my blog but I was like, who me? What would I write, who would even read my blog? About two years later I caved in and dived into this whole blogging thing and I can honestly say it was one of the best things I’ve done. Long story short, my beautiful friend inspired me to start writing my blog and I feel so lucky to have her in my life.

What’s your beauty philosophy?

My beauty philosophy is to use green, organic, cruelty free, ethical products. I agree in principle with taking minimalist approach, you know, “using less and loving more” but I just can’t do that. I wish I was able to but there are just too many beautiful brands and products I want to try.

What is your prescription for health?

It’s actually really simple. I try to eat loads of good and nutrient rich food like vegetables, fruits, grains and all that. I’m also all about healthy fats like avocados, seeds, and cold pressed oils. I eat mostly vegan and I’m feeling better than ever. Exercising is important too, physical and mental. For me health is a balance between mind, body and soul

Do you have a favorite ingredient? What do you love about it?

I have a few. :) It’s hard for me to decide, being a Libra and all that, but if there is one ingredient I highly recommend to everyone then that’s honey. Glorious, magical, raw honey. When I first heard of using it on my face I wasn’t sold on it. I thought it sticky and that washing off would be a pain in the bum. But that is so not the case! I’ve been absolutely loving it as a face mask. I leave it on for as long as I can but if I don’t have time then I at least try doing it for a few minutes. My skin is always so soft, smooth and moisturized when I wash it off. Honey is anti-bacterial and hydrating so it’s good for any skin problem, for oily and acne-prone or dry, mature skin. Can you tell I’m deeply in love with honey?

What inspires you?

There are lots of things and people one can be inspired by. I’m inspired by nature, especially spring, when all is blooming. I’m inspired by love, friendship, people who are passionate about their work.

How do you power up in the morning? How do you get energized?

Well I’m usually in a rush every morning so that alone energizes me. I try to wake and get up without hitting the snooze button and I always shower in the morning which usually wakes me up a bit. A cup of white or green tea also feels good on days when you have to wake up at 5.30 am.

Do you have a personal mantra?

I believe in karma and my mantra is “karma is a bitch”. So I always like to be kind, respective and thoughtful to others.

Do you have a favorite spa treatment?

I actually don’t. Unfortunately I never go to spa. But if I would then massages and facials would be the first treatments on my list.

Can you share one thing we don’t know about you yet?

This question always makes me think. In my last interview I’ve shared that I was a tomboy on one hand and “I have to change my clothes three times a day little miss fashionista” on the other. What you don’t know about me is that I had short hair and this particular style that I and three of my friends were wearing. Crucial part was having our hair on the back of our heads spiky using a lot of hair spray and hair gel. I think that someone once said our hairstyle looks like race car spoilers haha. So embarrassing. You know how everyone describes a mullet? Well this hairstyle also looked like “business in the front, party in the back”. I sure looked funny, to say the least.

Zen Moment: How do you unwind at the end of the day?

It doesn’t happen often but I really love a good bath while masking and watching YouTube videos or a TV show. But a bath is a rare occasion and a treat, not only because I don’t have the time for it but also because I’m mindful of my water consumption. Other thing that relaxes me is taking off my makeup and washing my face. I like to massage my face and then apply a mask as well. I like these mini spa sessions each evening. If I’m watching a TV show while masking then that’s even better.

In addition to Small Bits of Loveliness, what else do you do for work, hobbies and fun?

At the moment I’m working in a museum, where I do different things such as guiding visitors through our exhibitions, working with kids on different projects, helping with exhibitions and stuff like that. My hobbies are my blog and our magazine, The Peridot Mag, a new green beauty publication I am collaborating on with three other bloggers. Also, I love spending time with my loved ones, going on hikes, watching TV series, just your usual free time activities.

Where are we most likely to run into you on a Sunday?

Most of the time I’m out and about visiting my family or my boyfriend’s family. If the weather is nice you could also find me in nature.
