We’re passionate about organic skincare. One of the first things we do when looking at a new brand is notice if the company is committed to organic ingredients. Organic farming is better for the planet, and yields higher quality raw ingredients for skincare, just as it does for our dinner table. Most of our products contain a high percentage of organic ingredients, that have been carefully sourced and processed at the peak of their potency. With that said, here are seven specific benefits of organic products for skincare that apply to everything from face oils to mascara. .
- Pesticide-free
While some ingredients may be certified organic, or labeled as grown organically, the end result is that the plant was grown without potential pesticides. Organic skincare products generally refer to products that are made with a high percentage of organic ingredients, yielding a higher quality raw material that’s free of potentially harmful chemicals that can be present in pesticides.
Modern beauty and skincare products are disappointingly full of potentially harmful ingredients, like phthalates, parabens, mineral oil and other synthetic ingredients. Some of these ingredients are suspected of causing hormone irregularities and irritation. With prolonged use, some may even further exacerbate dry skin, which is the opposite of what you would expect from a skincare product.
- Organic skincare can help the environment
What many may not realize is that a skincare product’s effects begin on your skin, but they don’t end there. Some of what you put on your skin, or wash through your hair in the shower, or add to your bath water up in gray water as they run down the drain, where they will make their way into our waterways. These small particles can’t be filtered from water so they are often introduced into the environment, where they can bioaccumulate in our wildlife and plant life.
As organic skincare ingredients end up down the drain, they’re more safely reabsorbed into the natural ecosystem from which they originated.
- Beautiful aromatics, all from nature
Synthetic fragrances sometimes seem pleasant at first whiff, but you don’t know what’s in them. Ingredients in a synthetic fragrance are never defined, and it could be a combination of any number of chemicals.
At Beauty Heroes, we don’t allow any synthetic fragrance in the products we carry. But we don’t feel like we are missing anything because once you get used to the beautiful aromatics in organic skincare products, you may never want to have synthetic fragrance in your products again. Synthetic fragrance can commonly trigger allergic reactions. By having your organic skincare products clearly define the organic ingredients within, you can see what you are putting on your skin, and enjoy the beautiful aromatics from nature.
- Support cruelty-free organizations
While organic and cruelty-free are not necessarily synonymous, when consciously choosing organic skincare products, you may be supporting cruelty-free practices as well. The fact is that many organic skincare producers also invest in cruelty-free practices and stay away from procedures like animal testing that are still commonplace in many conventional beauty companies.
- No harmful aging effects
Some synthetic ingredients that are found in skincare products have been implicated in causing premature aging, especially when used over the long term. By contrast, organic skincare products will often be rich in oils and other natural ingredients that are packed with antioxidants.
Many skincare products are rich in vitamins C and E, as well as organic jojoba oil, olive oil, plum seed oil and countless other ingredients that are packed with antioxidants that may be able to actively counter the physical effects of aging.
- Plant-based skincare is effective
There are many studies on plant-based ingredients, from aloe vera, to rose, neroli, sea buckthorn – the list goes on and on. Many synthetics try to mimic what plants do naturally. The green beauty movement celebrates the incredible talents that plants bring to the table. Plants are wise and naturally work to balance our skin. Botanicals are teeming with antioxidants and phytonutrients that support healthy aging and protect skin from oxidative stress.
- 7. Organic skincare may support communities and farmers
Many organic beauty products use sustainably sourced ingredients and work in partnerships with small-scale farming operations. Oftentimes, these beauty companies are beneficial investors in these organic farms and have a direct hand in their success. Some companies directly give back to those communities, helping to build schools and farms.
- They can be better for your skin!
The beneficial, natural ingredients in organic products are full of helpful nutrients, anti-aging compounds, better fragrances and more – and ultimately, they’re better for your skin. They have the potential to be gentle, nourishing and restorative, and can be beneficial on their own, as in artisan slow beauty brand Laurel Skin, or paired with safe actives as in brands like ECOCERT Organic brand Mukti Organics or Josh Rosebrook.
If you’re interested in identifying skincare products like eye creams, face oils or face masks that are organic, one way to be sure of it is to check the ingredients lists on our product pages, and look out for the asterisk denoting organic or certified organic products.
