When I first connected with Tricia Trimble, the founder of Suntegrity, I was taken aback by the pure intention I felt coming through her voice. I also found a special connection through her story – how losing her mother to skin cancer led her to start Suntegrity and make a safe sunscreen collection of the highest quality in her honor. Having lost my mom around the same time Tricia lost hers, I sensed that we were meant to be introduced!

Then, once I tested Tricia’s 3-in-1 moisturizer, sunscreen and primer, I was amazed. It felt like so much more than sun protection. Since working with Suntegrity I have discovered that this small but mighty brand has an incredibly loyal following of devotees. I am now thrilled to be counted among them and to have the opportunity to share this heroic product – and its maker – with you.

JJ: What were your origins in creating skincare? How did you learn the art of formulating?

TT: I had been a recruiter for 9 years and was feeling a bit bored in my job when I heard a speech about the third chakra and personal power given by Caroline Myss at a Tony Robbins seminar. The instant I heard what she had to say, I knew I had to quit my job and pursue something that called more to my heart. Not quite knowing what that was, I started to explore things that interested me. I thought I wanted to open an inspirational type spa so I took classes in skincare, massage, coaching and healing. The skincare part really interested me so I took lots of advanced skincare courses and a few cosmetic chemistry classes at UCLA Extension. I can’t say I learned the art of formulating per se, but I did learn a lot about skincare and ingredients and I now work with formulators at various labs to make our products.

JJ: When it’s time to create a new product, how do you begin?

TT: I research what’s in the market already and I try to make something healthier and better in some way. For instance when I created our self tanner, I researched what all the “touted” ingredients were in other self tanners and I packed ours with all of the touted ingredients – not just one, but two or three of them! – and I chose the eco-cert version of the active ingredient to make ours even healthier.

JJ: How often do you make a new product? How long does that process take?

TT: We usually launch a new product every year to year and a half. We started with our Face Primer, then we launched our Tinted Sunscreens/BB Creams, then our self-tanner last year and later this year we will be launching lipsticks with SPF.

JJ: What’s your process? Do you begin with an ingredient or an objective? Please tell all!

TT: I start with the objective and go from there. For instance, the objective of our Suntegrity safe sunscreen is to get broad spectrum SPF 30 protection in the safest way possible so we started with non-nano size zinc-oxide and worked from there.

JJ: Do you have a favorite ingredient? What do you love about it?

TT: I love zinc oxide. Not only is it the safest broad spectrum sunscreen ingredient, but it’s also very therapeutic to the skin. It helps calm rashes and irritation, helps rosacea and even acne. That’s why they use it in diaper rash cream and calamine lotion.

JJ: How about a favorite product in the collection?

TT: The Tinted Face Sunscreen is my favorite product. If I was stranded on an island and I could only bring one product with me, the tinted sunscreen would definitely be it! It has replaced foundation for me. I love how it makes my skin look and feel.

JJ: Now that I see you’ve got a practical approach to creating your collection, do you have a creative muse?

TT: I ‘m not sure I have a muse per se, but I created Suntegrity safe sunscreen in honor of my Mom who passed away from melanoma skin cancer. It’s my way of turning lemons into lemonade and keeping her memory alive while helping others.
