How To Keep Maskne At Bay

If you haven’t heard of it, you may be experiencing it; Maskne, it’s a thing. Officially, maskne is defined as the appearance or increase in acne, heat rash, perioral dermatitis or rosacea that results from wearing a protective face covering.  While we are 100% pro-masks, but how you wear a mask, take care of your mask and take care of your skin can make all the difference. Wearing a mask increases moisture, heat and friction on the surface of the skin, and creates a perfect environment for bacteria to play. Since wearing a mask will likely be a part of our day-to-day reality for awhile, we thought we’d share our simple tips and Hero products to help you keep maskne at bay while protecting yourself and others.

Wash your mask regularly.

Depending on how long and often you need to wear your mask, you need to wash it often, and probably daily. Our favorite method is hand washing your mask with fragrance free detergent. Soak your mask in warm water and detergent for 5 minutes. Agitate it to clean, and rinse thoroughly with cool water. Air dry over night. Invest in multiple masks so you always have a clean one on hand.

Choose a skin friendly fabric…

Synthetic fabrics like polyester, neoprene and rayon are less breathable and may cause more heat, friction and therefore, mask. Choose a skin-friendly fabric like organic cotton, linen or silk.
