Stamps of Approval; A Closer Look at Certifications

Not everyone can be an expert on ingredient safety, farming practices, manufacturing and packaging, and the ethical treatment of animals. But if you’re a Beauty Heroes customer, we’re guessing at least some of these things are extremely important to you, because you’ve chosen to shop a curation of brands meticulously selected for their safety and healthy impact on the planet. If you look a little closer at the brands we’ve vetted, you’ll notice that many also proudly display various certification badges, such as MADE SAFE®, ECOCERT, EWG VERIFIED, and COSMOS, indicating a certain level of safety or specific practices. These certifications are earned via highly credible, third-party analysis so that you, the consumer, can quickly and easily connect with products reflective of your values.

Stringent, third-party accountability can be valuable in the beauty and wellness space, because these industries have historically focused on performance over potential harm, and to this day are relatively unregulated when it comes to ingredient safety and manufacturing practices. Certifications go a long way to provide standards that serve as a reference point for purchasing decisions in this arena. Today we’ll dive a little deeper into some of these specific certifications so that you come away with a sense of the role they play in beauty and personal care products..

Product Safety Certifications

MADE SAFE® is focused on human and ecosystem health. Products seeking the MADE SAFE seal are screened to ensure that over 6,500 Banned/Restricted List substances have been avoided or constrained. Disclosure of each substance involved in formulation is required in order to analyze potential sources of pollution as well as harmful impacts on soil, sediment, air, water, and human, aquatic and terrestrial life. They also screen for carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, toxins (behavioral, developmental, neurological, reproductive, or teratogenic), hazardous flame retardants, high-risk pesticides, toxic solvents, and harmful VOCs. The certification is an incredible badge of honor and integrity and ultimately gives shoppers trust around purchasing. At Beauty Heroes, you’ll find True Botanicals, whose entire line is MADE SAFE Certified, as well as products from Captain Blankenship and Ayuna.

Being a conscious beauty and wellness consumer, you may already be familiar with the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep®. EWG VERIFIED takes this one step further with a new certification to tell you which products meet their strictest criteria for your health. EWG VERIFIED products are thoroughly screened for any ingredients with health, ecotoxicity and/or contamination concerns. They must also meet EWG’s standards for ingredient disclosure on the label, including fragrance ingredients. Companies must develop and follow current good manufacturing practices to further ensure the safety of their products. With EWG VERIFIED you can expect the products with that seal meet a specified safety standard, making it easy to quickly evaluate any product bearing the badge. At Beauty Heroes, you’ll find EWG VERIFIED products from brands like True Botanicals, Eu’Genia Shea, Prima, and Three Ships.

Organic & Natural Certifications

Considering the origins of the ingredients used in wellness and beauty products, UK based Soil Association was the founder of the global organic movement, developing some of the world’s first organic standards allowing us to protect producers, consumers and the soil by endorsing nature-friendly farming methods. With very similar goals and values, ECOCERT was the first certification body to develop and implement a high and specialized standard to determine natural and organic products. They assess the full process of product development with the goal being to encourage practices that respect the environment, manage energy and natural resources, are socially responsible and improve product quality and safety. At Beauty Heroes you’ll find products with the ECOCERT badge from brands such as One Love Organics, Pai Skincare, Tabitha James Kraan and Mukti Organics.

Together ECOCERT and the Soil Association teamed up to launch COSMOS in order to harmonize the various cosmetic certifications and labels, creating one cohesive standard to be internationally recognized. There are three COSMOS certifications for raw materials, and two for final product certification: COSMOS Natural and COSMOS Organic. All products marketed with the COSMOS logo have been verified either natural or organic, providing consumers transparent information on the content of products on the market and inspiring consumer confidence. UZIMA is one of our newer brands at Beauty Heroes that has earned the COSMOS certification.

The Power of Your Wallet

Being on the shelf at Beauty Heroes gives a product extremely valuable credibility, as our vetting process is stringent and takes into account both ingredient safety and environmental impact. Beyond this, you can use specific certifications to help guide your buying practices and vote with your dollar, helping us demand stricter regulations on toxic chemicals in the marketplace and packaging requirements. Your spending sends an important message to the marketplace and to the wider investment community about what is wanted in commerce. Such intentional purchasing decisions create incremental shifts that will ultimately help transform the world. Conscious consumers, the power is in your hands!
