Facing Off Cancer
As I see the awareness of healthy skincare grow among women of all ages and backgrounds (and how far we have to go), I’m encouraged and enlivened by the women contributing to this conversation who have been personally affected by serious illnesses associated with environmental toxins. These capital-H Heroes who are facing off cancer, have transformed their most challenging life experiences into beauty businesses that reflect their unequivocal dedication to ingredient awareness.
At 35, Amy Rueda (1) was diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoid cancer, the same cancer that claimed the life of Steve Jobs, which has grown at a rate of over 500% in the past 20 years and is 90% tied to environmental toxins. Leading up to her diagnosis, Amy had used countless products to treat her acne, including Acutane. After her recovery, Amy became passionate about health and beauty and developed a results-oriented organic skincare line called Authentic Skin Remedies. She is now an educator on behalf of The Breast Cancer Fund and the Environmental Working Group’s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. You can read her inspiring and useful cancer survivor story here.
Even before she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Indie Lee (2) was dedicated to living a healthy life and helping others do so too. With her eponymous skincare collection, Lee had already established a commitment to living life beautifully and using only healthy, toxin free ingredients. “For me, it’s more than just a product line,” says Lee. “My true passion is to share my knowledge and story with others so that they can make powerful beauty choices for themselves. It’s about making a personal decision for each individual’s lifestyle, so long as they understand and weigh the negatives and ultimately understand the choices they are making.”
Barbara Jacques (3) learned she had an ovarian tumor at the same time she found out she was pregnant. Researching the cause of her tumor she discovered the link to environmental toxins and decided to do something about it. Fueled by the birth of her daughter, Barbara developed Jacqs Organics, a family-focused organic skincare line with products for men, women and kids made with healthy toxin free ingredients.
After losing her mother to skin cancer at the age of 21, Tricia Trimble (4) became vigilant about sun protection only to find that many sunscreens contained toxic chemicals. In her mother’s memory she created Suntegrity, a high performance sun protection line that combines superpowered antioxidants like green tea and pomegranate extracts along with amino acids to support skin function while non-nano size zinc oxide actively protect from uva/b rays.
These health inspiring women are leading the way in effective, healthy, toxin free skincare. Spa Heroes honors their courageous work by donating a portion of October’s subscription proceeds to The Breast Cancer Fund.
